Southern Plains Photography by Sean Ramsey

Sean Ramsey of Southern Plains Photography.
I grew up in the late 70's and 80's when it was a great time to be a kid, but financially times were tough for my family.  We didn't have much in the way of money and did without a lot of the time, but one thing we always were able to do was take a summer vacation.  My dad had a fascination with the Rocky Mountains so each summer for two weeks we would load up the van with camping gear and head north to Colorado, Wyoming and Montana to explore the Rockies and visit a lot of historical places along the way (like Ft. Laramie, Little Bighorn, and the Oregon Trail).  Although it made up a very small part of the year, it made for some of the best memories of my childhood.  Those two weeks each year would plant the seed for my love of the Rocky Mountains and my passion for western American history.

As I grew older, living in Oklahoma meant becoming more aware of the the weather.  Each spring brought intense storms that would periodically make us retreat to the cellar for safety, and on one particular occasion I remember tornado sirens going off and heading to the cellar but my dad left the door open, standing outside watching the clouds.  I remember looking up and seeing these green swirling clouds and although the danger was real, there was an excitement and fascination that evening that set the foundation for my love of the weather.

After I graduated from high school my parents decided to move to Wyoming, acting on their love of the mountains.  I chose to move with them, leaving Oklahoma behind.  It was like a double edged sword, because although I loved being close to the mountains, I really missed the storms.  Fast forward a few years and I returned to Oklahoma to go to college, but what I was most excited about was once again experiencing the weather.

Later on in my early adult years I figured out that I didn't have to wait for the weather to come to me, but I could hop in my car and go to it instead.  I began learning weather forecasting and studying patterns to better understand how it worked.  Pretty soon I found myself under some of the most incredible scenery anyone could experience.  The problem was, I had a hard time putting into words what I was seeing and although I had a point and click camera with me, it didn't come close to capturing what I saw.  This is where my love for photography was born.

Over the years I've honed by skills in both photography and weather and it has become my full time career.  Photography has allowed me to tie my love for landscapes, nature, weather and history together and present it in the form of images that each tell a story.  These days, I travel the country to capture heartfelt photographs that speaks to life in the regions I visit in both the natural world and from a historical perspective from days gone by.  I also roam the plains from March until June looking for the next incredible scene that nature can come up with, and still get that feeling of excitement and amazement each time I get to experience the weather.

It's my hope that when you purchase one of my works or view my gallery you not only see it, but feel it in the same way I did when I captured it.  Each image comes from a place where the world is still full of wonder, in its most natural state and might even remind you home.

Thank you for visiting and if you enjoy my work please let me know, I'd love to hear from you.
